Quick summary
This guide sets out practical steps to help you identify, compare and qualify for business finance in Australia. It is general information, not financial advice.
1. Map Your Year Before You Borrow
Seasonal businesses usually know their busy and quiet months. Put that on paper: a month-by-month forecast of revenue and fixed costs such as rent, wages, insurance, loan repayments and BAS payments. The months where costs exceed revenue are your funding gap. Knowing its size and timing tells you how much to borrow, for how long, and when you can repay it. A lender will also find a forecast far easier to assess than a request for a round number.
2. Match the Facility to the Gap
A short, repeating gap is usually better suited to a revolving facility than a long term loan. A line of credit lets you draw funds in the quiet months and repay when trade picks up, and you generally pay interest only on what you use. If your quiet months are caused by customers paying slowly rather than by low sales, invoice finance can release cash tied up in unpaid invoices. If you need to buy stock ahead of your peak, trade finance is built for that purpose. A term loan can still make sense for a one-off investment, such as equipment that lifts capacity in the busy season.
3. Expect Lenders to Look at a Full Year
Many lenders assess business bank statements. If your statements cover only your quiet months, your turnover can look weaker than it is. Be ready to show a longer period, or your most recent financial statements, so the lender sees the whole cycle. Explain the seasonality up front rather than waiting for the question. A clear explanation of why revenue dips, and when it recovers, helps a lender understand the pattern.
4. Arrange Finance Before the Gap Arrives
The easiest time to arrange a facility is while trade is strong and your accounts look healthy. Applying during the quiet months, when cash is tight, can be harder. Set up a line of credit ahead of time and leave it undrawn until you need it. Check any ongoing fees for an undrawn limit so you know what it costs to keep in place.
5. Keep Tax Obligations in the Plan
BAS, PAYG withholding and superannuation payments do not pause in the quiet months. Build them into your forecast. If a tax debt has already built up, talk to your accountant early. The ATO can discuss payment plans, and some businesses use finance to clear a tax debt, but each option has costs to compare.
