Quick summary
This guide sets out practical steps to help you identify, compare and qualify for business finance in Australia. It is general information, not financial advice.
1. Why Your Personal File Matters
For a small business, especially a sole trader or a newer company, the owner and the business are closely linked. Many business lenders check the personal credit file of directors or owners as well as any business credit history. A clean personal file can support an application, while defaults or a run of recent applications can raise questions.
2. What Your Credit File Shows
Australia uses comprehensive credit reporting. As well as credit enquiries, defaults and court judgements, your consumer credit file can show the credit accounts you hold and, for many accounts, your monthly repayment history. That means on-time repayments can work in your favour, and missed repayments can show up even if they never became a default.
3. Check Your File for Free Before You Apply
You can request a free copy of your credit report from each of the credit reporting bureaus, Equifax, Experian and illion, once every three months. Check each one, because they may hold different information. Look for accounts you do not recognise, defaults you have paid, and incorrect details. If something is wrong, you can ask the bureau or the credit provider to correct it.
4. Avoid Applying Everywhere at Once
Each credit application can be recorded as an enquiry on your file. Several applications in a short period can make lenders cautious. Compare options first and apply to the lender that suits your situation. A broker can help you understand which lenders are likely to fit before an application is lodged.
5. Explain Past Issues Up Front
A past default or a hard period does not rule out business finance. Some lenders, including specialist and low-doc lenders, will consider applicants with past credit issues, particularly where there is a clear explanation and current trading is strong. Be honest about what happened and what has changed.
